The Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road runs for 10.78 kilometres in the district Coimbatore's subdistrict Coimbatore. It links the communities of Koundampalayam, GN Mills, Thudiyalur, Vadamadurai, Narasimhanaickenpalayam, Therkkuppalayam, and Kuppakonam Pudur. In most places, it is six metres (20 feet) broad. The road narrows between Edayar Street, RG Street, and the Flower Market districts. As one of the city's most congested stretches, the Green Corridor system is being implemented between Chintamani and Thudiyalur to synchronise traffic signals. This route connects the city to the Saibaba Colony Bus Terminus and the Coimbatore Metropolitan Area's northern suburbs.
Mettupalayam is located at the foot of the Nilgiri Mountains on the banks of the Bhavani River. After Coimbatore and Pollachi, it is the third largest town in the Coimbatore district. It is nestled in the foothills of the Nilgiri hills to the north of Coimbatore city on the road to Ooty. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway begins at Mettupalayam railway station, which operates India's first rack railway between Ooty and Mettupalayam.
Mettupalayam came into existence through the sellers of the River Bhavani. Mettupalayam got its name from its ups and downs. Medum, pallamum became Mettupalayam. It was once a very little village surrounded by dense trees on the western ghats. Then it became the beginning point for the East India Company's journey into the Nilgiris.
Initially, a little roadway was established, and all materials and supplies were brought on horseback and by animals. Then there was the ancient Niligiri Mountain Railway, which opened in 1899. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which runs from Mettupalayam to Ooty, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nilgiri Express connects Mettupalayam to Chennai via Coimbatore. Mettupalayam is at the foot of the Nilgiri Hills and so serves as the beginning point for the Ghat Roads.
Every day, MEMU express special trains run between Coimbatore Junction and Mettupalayam. Mettupalayam is 35 km from Coimbatore by road, and the nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport. A bypass route from Sulur Kangeyampalayam to Mettupalayam via Odanthurai to Ooty has been proposed.
Mettupalayam Road is close to a number of schools, healthcare services, and entertainment venues. Along the stretch, well-known educational institutions include Vidya Vikasini Institutions, Camford International, SNS Academy, Vel International School, Avinashilingam University, Angappa Senior Secondary CBSE School, and Amrit Special Needs School.
Among the well-known healthcare institutions are VG Hospital, Kalpana Medical Centre, Ganga Hospital, BRJ Ortho Centre & MAK Hospital, Aswin Hospital, and KTVR Group Hospital. There are also numerous employment hubs and tech parks in the area. The largest employment hubs are around 20 minutes distant, at Tidal Park and ELCOT SEZ. More job centres nearby Mettupalayam include Calibre Interconnect Solutions Pvt Ltd, Srivatsa Industrial Estate, AES Technologies India Private Limited, and Pramura Software Private Limited.

In order to alleviate traffic congestion on the Mettupalayam Road, the National Highways Authority of India has proposed a bypass road from Neelambur on NH47 that will connect to the Mettupalayam Road at Narasimhanaickenpalayam. Which will further develop this area, and boost real estate pricing.
Mettupalayam Road, NH 181 is a major arterial road in Coimbatore and it runs about 10 kilometers. These are the prominent localities located along this major road: Sai Baba colony, Goundampalayam, GN Mills, Thudiyalur, Narasimhanaickenpalayam, and Periyanaickenpalayam.
The well-known Saibaba temple that is found here gave rise to the name Saibaba Colony. There are largely single-family homes in this peaceful residential neighborhood. Thanks to its rising popularity, the neighborhood recently began to experience a housing boom. Upper-middle-class residents of Coimbatore now make up the majority of the population in the area.
